"Get Set to Make Your Mascot" ... Children are being given the chance to design their own version of the London 2012 mascots to represent Coventry and Warwickshire during the build up to the Games.
London 2012 organisers want primary and secondary school pupils across Coventry and Warwickshire to design versions of London 2012 mascots Wenlock and Mandeville which represents the region as part of the Make Your Mascot project.
The Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games (CW2012) is supporting the project, open to all schools which have registered to be part of the London 2012 Get Set Education programme.
Currently half of all schools and colleges in the region are registered to the free online programme which aims to help those in education aged between three and 19-years-old get involved with London 2012 by reflecting the Olympic and Paralympic values. CW2012 aims to have every school in the region registered by 2012.
The winning mascot design will become one of 12 mascot design projects picked to represent their respective regions - one for each of the English regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Entrants should include a customised version of Wenlock and/or Mandeville along with an explanation of how the design represents Coventry and Warwickshire. Pupils should also include some research about the local area and community as well as the region’s sporting or cultural heritage.
The project could include a photograph of a model or drawing of the design and an outline of where pupils would like to take the mascot, what they would show it and what they want it to learn about the people and places in the region. There are separate competitions for primary and secondary school pupils and entries must be less than 10 pages long and submitted before the Friday, December 10 deadline.
Tom Clift, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership manager for the 2012 Games, said:
“This competition is a perfect example of the benefits for schools and colleges that sign up to the Get Set programme. It provides a great chance for youngsters in the region to engage with London 2012 and really think about what the Games means to them and Coventry and Warwickshire. 'Make Your Mascot' is just one of many fantastic opportunities available for to schools through Get Set and is completely free to access so we encourage teachers and pupils to make sure their school is registered to avoid missing out! Pupils looking for information to help with their projects should check out our new website www.cswp.org.uk/london2012 which is packed full of information about Coventry and Warwickshire’s proud Olympic and Paralympic history and our iconic cultural heritage including Lady Godiva and William Shakespeare.”
Students from shortlisted schools will have the chance to spend a day in London presenting their ideas to a panel of judges and winning schools will be visited by either Wenlock or Mandeville.

|
- People knowing their rights and responsibilities
|
- People understanding and trusting one another and trusting local organisations to act fairly.
|
An executive summary of the Community Cohesion Strategy is also available. The Big Lunch 2010: Sunday 18th July
Big Lunch brings communities together.....
13 Big Lunches took place on Sunday 18 July across Coventry, from a simple lunch in the garden to a big community event.
The Big Lunch was a chance for different generations and backgrounds to hear each other out and share stories, skills and interests.
A big park lunch was lined up for Gosford Park and also, with the help of Whitefriars, in places like Willenhall and Foleshill. There were a total of 13 Big Lunches organised across the city. You can check out some of the locations at:
www.thebiglunch.com/map/find-a-big-lunch.php
These included:
- Gosford Park Primary School,
- FolesHillfields Healthy Summer,
- Godiva Mela - Edgewick Park, Foleshill (where the Lord Mayor attended),
The Big Lunch is led by the Eden Project with the support of a family of partners, The Big Lottery Fund, MasterCard, EDF Energy and the Department of Communities and Local Government who all want to break down barriers and build bridges within neighbourhoods.
Sue Bent, Director, Coventry Law Centre and chair of the Equalities and Cohesion Thematic Group of the Coventry partnership said, “The big Lunches which took place across Coventry yesterday really built on the success last year. This year the feedback we've had so far has been really positive. The photos from across the city really bring to life the fun that people were having."
